About Laurie MacKinnon Ph.D.

Over the last 30 years, Laurie MacKinnon Ph.D. has provided therapy to individuals, couples and families in Sydney, Australia. She has trained and supervised a generation of Sydney’s couple and family therapists and provided consultation to many of Sydney’s counselling organisations. (See www.insiteconsulting.com.au)

 

Originally from Canada, Dr. Laurie MacKinnon qualified as a clinical social worker and worked in psychiatric emergency services, a hospital and various community outpatient therapy clinics, an aged care facility and as a community worker on a First Nations Cree reservation. She trained and later worked as a family therapist and supervisor at the Family Therapy Program, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary, whose reputation for excellence attracted visiting international family therapists including the Milan Associates.

 

Laurie completed her doctorate in Sydney and her research informed her book "Trust and Betrayal in the Treatment of Child Abuse" (1998).  She has published on a wide range of topics within the field of couple and family therapy, presented both nationally and internationally and led several teams presenting at national conferences. 

 

In May 2012, the American Family Therapy Academy recognised Laurie’s work with the Distinguished Contribution to Family Therapy Theory and Practice Award.   In October 2012, the Australian & New Zealand Journal of Family Therapy awarded Laurie the Special Award for Distinguished Contributions to Family Therapy.

 

She is on the board of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Family Therapy and the boards of assessors for the Journal of Family Therapy (UK) and Journal of Systemic Therapy (USA).
